The tragic love story of the Trojan hero Aeneas and the queen of Carthage, Dido, was very popular in the 17th century. After the death of her husband, Dido vows to never remarry. But then Aeneas arrives. He and his companions have been travelling for seven years since the fall of Troy and arrive at the dawn of a new Roman kingdom. He was called upon by the gods to create a new empire in Italy, but a storm has left him stranded on the shores of North Africa.
There he meets the huntress Venus, who turns out to be his mother. Venus advises him to find queen Dido, who at that time was diligently working on establishing a new state and city: Carthage.< Back
