Jupiter, king of the gods, loses patience with Aeneas who appears to have forgotten his vow to travel to Italy and start a new kingdom. It is time to take action. Mercury, messenger to the gods, is sent to remind Aeneas of this task.
Aeneas is startled by the sudden appearance of Mercury and remembers what was asked of him. It is true: his love of Dido had blinded him to the request of the gods.
