Aeneas and Dido flee the storm

(Virgil, Aeneid IV, 160 ff.)

During a hunting party, Aeneas and Dido are caught up in a terrible storm and seek shelter in a cave. They profess their love for each other and share their first kiss. The two gods of love, watching from the clouds above, feel their work is done.

After having professed their love for each other, this story could have ended happily had Aeneas not been reminded by the gods of the higher duties that await him.
